“I travel around the world with design and decoration always in my suitcase”

Lei was born in the Basque Country but her life has had many stops and places. Currently residing in Madrid, she has created her own interior design and decoration firm. WeDecor, as it is called, is also the creative and executing arm at the decoration level of Stayland, the key accommodation holding company in Homare’s trajectory (read our Magazine post). Chatting with her has been a delight and collaborating with WeDecor is something that will happen sooner or later, I’m sure.

You’ve traveled half the world, Lei.
That’s right… But in addition to the places I’ve worked (you’d be surprised), the most curious thing comes from my training, which is that I studied Environmental Sciences. I spent a few years working in related companies doing environmental impact assessments. What happened is that I lacked a pinch of creativity that my head asked for, and that’s where my little ‘tour’ around the world begins.
I moved to Madrid and did a master’s degree in… Garden Design! And of course, I was working in the capital doing landscaping and collaborating with architecture studios, designers, etc. In one of the many projects that I was carrying out at that time, specifically in La Moraleja, I ran into a Sheikh who gave me the opportunity for a fresh restart, working in landscaping and floral art.

Environmental impact, landscaping, floral art… It almost seems like a chain of consequences.
That’s how it is. I went back to broaden my studies and delved deeply into the floral theme. I moved to Barcelona and began my journey into the world of events, their decoration, floral art, weddings, etc. That time was precious and I think it gave me a lot of know-how for what I do today at WeDecor.
That is when we moved to Mexico City and my real estate career began in a firm called ‘Espacio Vivo’. Here, basically, we focus on ‘expatriates’ and investors, and it is where, finally, I start with the decoration and design since the ‘expatriates’, for example, wanted to arrive in DF with the house assembled and ready. It is without a doubt when I dive almost fully into what I do today. Then came Canada, which is where I already dedicated myself, as a freelancer, to decoration and interior design just before coming to Madrid.

What a journey… And today?
Today is WeDecor, and a daily job that I am passionate about. I am very committed to Stayland and to the team they have working in the US, from here I help them with consultancies, design, ideation and we are carrying out a very high number of luxury apartments and villas per month, it is fantastic. I am very happy because I have found a human team and an amazing business project that guarantees me to be able to do what I like: travel and move around the world with design and decoration always in my suitcase.
